Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Style
weekdays 7:30 - 10:30
In Ashtanga Yoga practice, students are gradually guided through a fixed series of postures with a qualified teacher. Students practice at their own pace, and according to their ability. In order to see the intended benefits, which are quite dramatic, bringing practitioners to optimal heath and well-being, this practice should be performed daily over a long period of time. The movements are linked together by specific breathing technique, gazing-points, and Vinyasas (specific movement phrases). Students are taught individually, with a lot of personal attention, and the class is much like getting a private lesson within the context of a small group. Mysore is a city in the state of Karnataka, in South India, where Krishnamacharya, and Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the original teachers of this style of Yoga practice come from, and where the tradition still continues with Sri K Pattabhi Jois’ grandson, Sharath Rangaswamy.
Students with an existing practice may arrive any time between start of class, and up to 1 hour before doors close. We welcome new students, and request that they arrive as close to 9:15AM as possible.
Jivamukti Yoga
Monday and Wednesday 18:00 - 19:30; Friday 17:00 - 18:30
Jivamukti is a dynamic athletic style of practice, like “Power Yoga,” stringing together creative and challenging sequences of Sun Salutations with standing postures, accompanied by awesome soundtracks. Jivamukti classes build in intensity, moving along at a brisk pace, taking students through a thoroughly hypnotic and transformative experience. These classes will also include the practice of Inversions (postures where the head is below the heart*) and arm-balances. Leave your old body at the door, sweat off the surface layers of accumulated grime and fatigue, and set free the bright, shining, soulful spirit lying just below the surface! The Jivamukti Yoga method was created by Sharon Gannon and David Life.
Beginners Yoga
Tuesday, Thursday 18:00 - 19:00
This is a pure technique class: The A.B.C.’s of essential Yoga Postures. Approaching the Sun Salutation. Correct breathing. Correct alignment. How to avoid injury and bad habits in your practice. When first starting out with a yoga practice, we recommend a minimum of 2 classes per week.
Ashtanga Beginners
Saturday 10:30 - 11:45
If you are curious about Ashtanga Yoga, this class is a perfect introduction to the form. We will go over the proper breathing technique, and break down the practice into its four respective parts: 1)Sun Salutations, 2)Standing Postures, 3)Seated Postures, 4)Finishing Sequence. The focus will be on learning all the postures in the Sun Salutations, and Standing Sequence in detail, and the Seated and Finishing sequences will be modified in order that they are approachable for the newer student.
